In a candid discussion at the inaugural mental fitness summit hosted by her company, Wondermind, Selena Gomez shared her struggles with mental health and its impact on her daily life, particularly her relationship with her bedroom. The 32-year-old singer and actress revealed that she cannot sleep in her bedroom due to the negative memories associated with it.
“I spent too much time in my bedroom that I actually don’t even sleep in my bedroom anymore,” Gomez disclosed, explaining that the space reminds her of a “really dark time” in her life. Having previously spoken openly about her battles with anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder, Selena emphasized the debilitating effects these conditions have had on her.
Reflecting on her experiences, Selena described the overwhelming nature of anxiety, stating, “Being anxious is so debilitating sometimes. I didn’t want to leave my bed for years, and part of it was I wasn’t doing the work.” She acknowledged the importance of self-belief and taking proactive steps towards healing, noting that it is essential to engage in activities that promote mental wellness.
During the summit, Selena also recounted a particularly restless night before the event, revealing she struggled to sleep until 4 a.m. due to racing thoughts. “I just kept saying over and over again, ‘This will pass. Just let it go through your body and it’ll go away,'” she shared, illustrating her coping mechanism of self-affirmation.
Furthermore, Gomez stressed the importance of having a supportive inner circle, advocating for open conversations as a pathway to wellness. “I have a therapist, too, but it’s also nice to have people around you who will just listen to you,” she mentioned. She added that releasing pent-up emotions can provide a sense of freedom, helping to alleviate the burdens of anxiety.
Identifying herself as “a very anxious person,” Selena emphasized the significance of positive self-talk. “Having a positive conversation with yourself, even if that sounds weird, it’s really impactful,” she concluded.
As Selena continues to navigate her mental health journey, her openness about these challenges serves as an inspiration for many facing similar struggles.
