Anna Kendrick has stepped behind the camera for the first time, making her directorial debut with Woman of the Hour, a chilling crime thriller based on true events. The Pitch Perfect star opened up about her decision to direct this intense project in a statement, saying she resonated deeply with its themes.
Kendrick explained that her choice surprised some of her peers, as many associate her with comedy. But for her, the story’s exploration of safety, betrayal, and the chilling realities women face in unsafe spaces struck a personal chord. Reflecting on the violent opening scene, she said, “I’ve been through experiences where you suddenly realize you’re with someone deeply unsafe. That earth-shattering moment felt vital to portray.” Despite initial pushback, Kendrick insisted on keeping the unsettling opening intact, cementing her vision for the film.
The story of Woman of the Hour centers on Sheryl Bradshaw, a hopeful contestant on a 1970s dating show. What begins as a quest for romance turns harrowing when Sheryl crosses paths with Rodney Alcala, a charismatic but deadly serial killer played by Daniel Zovatto.
The film will stream exclusively on Lionsgate Play starting November 29.
