ANDREW GARFIELD
The Oscar-nominated actor opens up about his new film, personal healing, and who’s on his wish list to work with next.

Andrew Garfield is back in the limelight, shedding his sabbatical skin like a phoenix rising from the ashes of Hollywood’s bright lights. The British actor, renowned for his diverse roles ranging from the charming Spider-Man to poignant dramatic performances, is set to grace the San Sebastian Film Festival this Saturday as the closing night film star in We Live in Time.

After a well-deserved break from the spotlight, Garfield expressed his renewed joy for acting, stating, “I feel looser, I feel less precious, I feel more joyful.” During his recent time in the picturesque Spanish coastal town, he relished the local cuisine and reconnected with old friends, all while preparing for his highly anticipated return to the screen.

We Live in Time features Garfield alongside the talented Florence Pugh in a touching romantic drama that explores love, loss, and the fragility of life. The film, directed by John Crowley, tells the story of an up-and-coming chef and a recent divorcée who fall in love amidst life’s unpredictability. As they navigate their relationship, a late-stage cancer diagnosis forces them to cherish their time together, adding an emotional layer to the narrative.

Reflecting on the film’s significance, Garfield revealed how it resonates deeply with his personal experiences. After losing his mother to cancer in 2019, he found a “very simple act of healing” in this project. “Every living thing has lost a mother. It felt very much like a part of my little break I was taking,” he said. This film represents more than just a return to acting; it’s a cathartic journey that intertwines his personal grief with the film’s poignant themes.

When asked about the factors that drew him to this project, Garfield credited the script by Nick Payne, whom he admires for his ability to weave humor, heart, and sensitivity. “It felt like this was the inside of my heart right now,” he noted, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to channel his emotions into such a meaningful narrative.

Garfield’s upcoming projects only amplify the excitement surrounding his return. He is set to star in The Magic Faraway Tree, alongside Claire Foy and Nicola Coughlan, as well as Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt, featuring Julia Roberts and Ayo Edebiri. With a roster of projects on the horizon, the question remains: Who does he want to work with next? Garfield whimsically mentioned “twenty-eight” actors he’d love to collaborate with, including his long-time aspiration to team up with Ryan Gosling.

As Garfield takes the red carpet by storm once again, fans and critics alike are eager to witness his evolution as an actor. With We Live in Time, he invites audiences to explore the beauty of life’s fleeting moments—a true testament to the artistry of storytelling.
