Hollywood icon Angelina Jolie is set to be honored with the prestigious Maltin Modern Master Award at the 40th Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) on February 5, 2025. The award, which recognizes major contributions to cinema, has previously been bestowed upon legends like Robert Downey Jr., Nicole Kidman, and Denzel Washington. Jolie will receive the accolade for her captivating portrayal of opera singer Maria Callas in Pablo Larrain’s biographical drama Maria.

Jolie’s performance in Maria has garnered widespread praise, with the film earning an eight-minute standing ovation at its Venice Film Festival world premiere. The biopic reimagines the final days of American Greek soprano Maria Callas, exploring her struggles with identity and legacy. Overwhelmed by the audience’s reception at Venice, Jolie was visibly moved and seen wiping away tears.

Leonard Maltin, the legendary film critic for whom the award is named, praised Jolie’s bold artistic choices, both as an actress and a director. He remarked, “She sets the bar high in both disciplines and always comes through. I look forward to reviewing her incredible career with her in Santa Barbara.”

Jolie’s storied career spans decades. She made her acting debut as a child alongside her father, Jon Voight, and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Girl, Interrupted (1999). Her critically acclaimed performances in A Mighty Heart (2007) and Changeling (2008), as well as blockbuster roles in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and Maleficent, have cemented her as one of Hollywood’s most versatile and beloved stars. Additionally, Jolie has proven her talent behind the camera, directing films like Unbroken (2014) and First They Killed My Father (2017).

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival will run from February 4 to 15, 2025, celebrating Jolie’s continued influence on cinema.
