Johnny Depp makes his long-awaited return to directing with Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness, which premiered at the San Sebastian Film Festival. The biographical drama, featuring Al Pacino and Riccardo Scamarcio, chronicles three tumultuous days in the life of Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani. While Depp’s direction has generated curiosity, critics are divided on whether this film brings new life to Modigliani’s story or falls short of expectations.

Depp, best known for his acting prowess, hasn’t directed a feature film since The Brave in 1997. With Modi, many anticipated a fresh, intimate portrayal of the troubled artist whose life was marked by scandal, drugs, and unorthodox brilliance. However, despite the intriguing subject matter, early reviews suggest that the film fails to deliver the depth needed to captivate modern audiences.

The film stars Riccardo Scamarcio as Modigliani and highlights a brief, chaotic period of the artist’s life in Paris, set in 1916. Al Pacino, who was originally slated to direct, plays art collector Maurice Gangnat in a significant supporting role. According to reports, Pacino encouraged Depp to take over directing duties, leading to the film we see today.

Critics have labeled the film a “decorative period piece” rather than a compelling exploration of the artist’s psyche. The script, written by Jerzy Kromolowski and Mary Olson-Kromolowski, is adapted from Dennis McIntyre’s play Modigliani and focuses heavily on Modigliani’s reckless lifestyle, yet fails to delve deeply into his artistic process. Viewers hoping for an immersive take on his creative genius may be left wanting more.

The film has been praised for its rich period detail, strong performances by the cast—particularly Antonia Desplat, who plays Modigliani’s lover Beatrice Hastings—and its musical selections, which include tracks by the Velvet Underground and Tom Waits. However, many have noted that the film lacks emotional impact, with one critic calling it “more sketch than portrait.”

Despite these criticisms, Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness is expected to attract attention due to Depp’s star power and his nuanced connection to Modigliani’s chaotic genius. Whether it will win over art house crowds or remain a niche biopic remains to be seen.

The film’s journey at the festival circuit will likely dictate its commercial future, with audiences eager to see if Depp’s return to the director’s chair can live up to his larger-than-life reputation.
